Chomsky / Foucault debate

February 13, 2007

I first saw this debate between Chomsky and Foucault about five years ago, and still dig it thoroughly. Unfortunately, this clip doesn’t subtitle Foucault’s French in English (although it does subtitle everything in Dutch, if that helps). The full script of the debate (in English) is here. The debate appears in its entirety on the DVD release of the documentary about Chomsky, Manufacturing Consent, which is also well worth a look. I agree with Chomsky’s description of, and justifications for, an appropriate form of social organization that maximizes human potential for autonomy and creativity, but don’t share his belief in its potential for being actually manifested on this planet, at least not by members of our species.
